Laser Hair Removal Q & A

Why use laser for hair removal?

Laser treatment directs beams of highly concentrated light into your hair follicles. When the follicles absorb the light, they are destroyed. Dr. Shabazz uses the Elite+ laser removal machine made by the company Cynosure®. This machine is considered the gold standard for hair removal due to its specially developed power that combines 2 wavelengths. This provides greater energy output than other lasers for faster results. The process is pain-free and, depending on the thickness of the unwanted hair, only takes a few visits.

Can anyone use laser for hair removal?

The Elite+ laser is highly adjustable. Dr. Shabazz evaluates the site of your unwanted hair and tunes the machine according to the body part, skin coloration, and skin and hair thickness. Most people tolerate the procedure well. Even small, sensitive areas, including the upper lip, are candidates for laser hair removal.

What should I expect?

After a consultation with Dr. Shabazz, you’ll schedule a treatment. When you arrive, expect longer hairs in the treatment area to be trimmed and a gel or lotion to be applied to protect your outermost layers of skin from the laser. Both you and the doctor wear eye protection. Depending on the size of the area treated, the actual procedure takes between 1-30 minutes. After the session, the office provides you with cool compresses, ice packs, or lotion to ease inflammation.

What’s the recovery process?

Following a treatment, your skin might appear reddened — as if you’re sunburned — for just a day or so. You might experience some skin sensitivity in the beginning and should notice the hair falls out over the course of the next month. Sunscreen is essential for several weeks following treatment to prevent discoloration. If your face was treated, you can usually wear makeup the next day.
